Beekeeping isn’t complex rocket science, having said that there are so many variables to consider when beekeeping and that is why a beekeeping guide is a very good investment. In this article are some of the things that you’ll need to consider when beekeeping.

The equipment needed varies with the size of your operation, number of colonies, and the type of honey you plan to produce. The basic equipment you need are the components of the hive, protective gear, smoker and hive tool, and the equipment you need for handling the honey crop, a beekeeping guide can help you understand how all these components all come together smoothly.

Honey bees normally only sting to defend themselves or their colony; when colonies are handled properly and precautions are taken, stinging is not a major problem. Most beekeepers develop a tolerance for bee venom over time and have reduced sensitivity to pain and swelling. However, the few people who react strongly to bee stings and pollen or who are unable to get over fears of stings should avoid contact with bees.

Honey bees are social insects, which means that they live together in large, well-organized family groups. Social insects are highly evolved insects that engage in a variety of complex tasks not practiced by the multitude of solitary insects. A decent beekeeping guide will be able to explain these complex interactions.

A honey bee colony typically consists of three kinds of adult bees: workers, drones, and a queen. Several thousand worker bees cooperate in nest building, food collection, and brood rearing. Each worker has a definite task to perform, depending on its age. But surviving and reproducing take the combined efforts of the entire colony. Individual bees (workers, drones, and queens) cannot survive without the support of the colony.

In addition to thousands of worker adults, a colony normally has a single queen and several hundred drones during late spring and summer. The social structure of the colony is maintained by the presence of the queen and workers and depends on an effective system of communication. The distribution of chemical pheromones among members and communicative “dances” are responsible for controlling the activities necessary for colony survival.

Labor activities among worker bees depend primarily on the age of the bee but vary with the needs of the colony. Reproduction and colony strength depend on the queen, the quantity of food stores, and the size of the worker force. As the size of the colony increases up to a maximum of about 60,000 workers, so does the efficiency of the colony.

As you can see or “read”, beekeeping isn’t rocket science but you would be well advised to seek out some help on this subject and a beekeeping guide is something that you can refer to time after time.

One thing not mentioned yet are the common pests and diseases of the honey bee.
Honeybees are affected by a number of pests and diseases that may be subdivided into
three main categories: (1) pests, (2) diseases and (3) viral infections. Good bee husbandry should include, monitoring colonies for diseases, becoming familiar with the symptoms of the various adult and brood diseases

Mice are the most common and troublesome rodent pest of honeybee colonies. They
become a problem during autumn and winter when beehives provide them with food
(pollen, honey and bees) and protection from the cold.

Wasps and bumble bees can invade weak honey bee nests and steal their honey, a phenomenon referred to as “robbing”.

There are a number of honey bee viral diseases which include , sacbrood virus, deformed wing virus, kashmir virus, acute bee paralysis virus, black queen cell virus, chronic bee paralysis virus and parasitic mite syndrome.

As I’ve mentioned before, beekeeping isn’t complex rocket science, there are so many variables to consider when beekeeping and that is why a beekeeping guide is a very good investment.

One has to be a meticulous engineer, a passionate artist, and a style maverick all rolled into one creative being.
Kira Ramirez, 26, has been creating hand painted accessories under the name EarthlyDelights since last year. “I started tinkering with beads, precious stones, buttons, chains and ribbons and making them into necklaces and rings during the summer of 2006. At that time, I knew I wanted to have a business of my own – something that I was passionate about and at the same time was fun to do. I am an accessory aficionado so I decided to make them myself and just hoped that people would appreciate and buy them,” she states.
She began with some self-study – relying on fashion magazines, online research, some trial and error. After six months, Kira took a class on beading and wiring techniques under Em Mariano. Armed with sharper skills and a head full of ideas just waiting to take form, she began to venture into the accessory business in April of 2007.
Her initial concerns had to do with the leap from a beloved hobby into becoming part of the accessory industry. She remembers, “At first I only made eight pieces because I didn’t know how people would react to it.”
It took only a short time to allay those concerns. Kira enthuses, “I posted them online and I was so overwhelmed with the response! Then a few weeks after that, Isa Alvarez of Make Love Not War boutique asked if I would be willing to consign my hand painted necklaces there. And three more stores followed suit.”
Kira discovered there was a huge demand for that certain inimitable and exquisitely designed accessory that could put a mark on fashion statements anywhere – and she was was more than happy to fill it.
What is the creative process behind accessory making? Kira reveals, “The theme is the first thing I am concerned with when making necklaces. Right now, I am preparing for my summer collection, which means bright colors, beach-inspired images, florals, etc.The pendants and other raw materials (beads, stones, wires, etc.) are sourced several months in advance which entails having to scour a lot of bead shops.”
Kira shares the experience, “I also consult fashion magazines or books, look for fabrics with interesting colors and patterns for design inspiration. The actual painting [of the accessory] is done a few weeks before the target launch date. I must say that I am very fortunate to be able to work with a very good and talented painter whom I share my ideas with. Finally, the finished pendants are attached to either gold or silver chains with minimal beading as the pendants themselves should be the main attraction of the neckpiece.”
As much as possible, Kira tries to make just one piece per design. She also, under certain circumstances, accepts accessory customization. Who does Kira want to see wearing an EarthlyDelight necklace?
“I would like to see someone who is creative and playful wear my necklaces. [Socialite and celebrity] Tessa Prieto-Valdes is a good example–she’s fun, fearless and doesn’t take fashion too seriously,” Kira answers, “My necklaces are so versatile that you can wear them with anything! I initially presented it as an accessory you can wear to the beach – it’s pretty, colorful and waterproof! But I’ve seen customers wear it with the basic tee and jeans ensemble, others with a flattering low-cut dress and some even wear it to work.”

With a luxe line coming out soon, a bag collection and other delightful surprises on its way, EarthlyDelights will continue to flourish its gift of charm and artistry that paradoxically, is quite heavenly.

After making several styles of copper bangle bracelets, I found they began to tarnish very quickly after coming in contact with my skin. On a hot summer
day, a newly made copper chain turned black while I wore it. To keep the bracelets relatively shiny and to remove the tarnish required frequent rubbing
with #0000 steel wool and an occasionally with a polishing cloth. The copper chain was more difficult to clean.

After reading many blogs and several
articles on the value of aging copper jewelry, I decided to conduct an experiment to compare the appearance of new copper jewelry and the appearance of the
same jewelry aged. Copper naturally tarnishes easily giving an aged look, but not a very dark color for quite some time, just a dulled look.

After reading several articles about aging copper jewelry in liver of sulfur, which is used to age copper, I decided to use photographs to compare how
each bracelet looked before and after aging. The new shiny copper bracelets were all photographed as well as the one that had been polished with #0000
steel and and a polishing cloth. The bracelets were dipped in warm liver of sulfur solution only a minute or so until they turned black. After removing
from the solution, and rinsing in water, I dried them thoroughly. Steel wool and a polishing cloth were used to polish each bracelet to bring out the
highlights. The photographs are on our blog.

Aging gives character to the jewelry by darkening the crevices just as oxidizing silver jewelry adds to its appearance. The design elements in the copper
are accented by the polished highlights. Unless a coating is added, the jewelry will have to be renewed periodically with #0000 steel wool and a
polishing cloth. This will take very little time. The whole jewelry piece has an unusual finished appearance after aging. My preference has changed to
prefer aged copper jewelry.

It was a cold night in Washington, D.C., and I was heading back to the hotel when a man approached me. He asked if I would give him some money so he could get something to eat. I’d read the signs: “Don’t give money to panhandlers.” So I shook my head and kept walking.

cheap gucci shoes

I wasn’t prepared for a reply, but with resignation, he said, “I really am homeless and I really am hungry! You can come with me and watch me eat!” But I kept on walking.

The incident bothered me for the rest of the week. I had money in my pocket and it wouldn’t have killed me to hand over a buck or two even if he had been lying. On a frigid, cold night, no less, I assumed the worst of a fellow human being.

Flying back to Anchorage, I couldn’t help thinking of him. I tried to rationalize my failure to help by assuming government agencies, churches and charities were there to feed him. Besides, you’re not supposed to give money to panhandlers.

Somewhere over Seattle, I started to write my weekly garden column for The Anchorage Daily News. Out of the blue, I came up with an idea. Bean’s Cafe, the soup kitchen in Anchorage, feeds hundreds of hungry Alaskans every day. Why not try to get all my readers to plant one row in their gardens dedicated to Bean’s? Dedicate a row and take it down to Bean’s. Clean and simple.

We didn’t keep records back then, but the idea began to take off. Folks would fax me or call when they took something in. Those who only grew flowers donated them. Food for the spirit. And salve for my conscience.

In 1995, the Garden Writers Association of America held their annual convention in Anchorage and after learning of Anchorage’s program, Plant a Row for Bean’s became Plant a Row For The Hungry. The original idea was to have every member of the Garden Writers Association of America write or talk about planting a row for the hungry sometime during the month of April.

As more and more people started working with the Plant a Row concept, new variations cropped up, if you will pardon the pun. Many companies gave free seed to customers and displayed the logo, which also appeared in national gardening publications.

Row markers with the Plant a Row logo were distributed to gardeners to set apart their “Row for the Hungry.”

Garden editor Joan Jackson, backed by The San Jose Mercury News and California’s nearly year-round growing season, raised more than 30,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables her first year, and showed GWAA how the program could really work.

Texas fruit farms donated food to their local food bank after being inspired by Plant a Row. Today the program continues to thrive and grow.

gucci sneakers

I am stunned that millions of Americans are threatened by hunger. If every gardener in America – and we’re seventy million strong – plants one row for the hungry, we can make quite a dent in the number of neighbors who don’t have enough to eat. Maybe then I will stop feeling guilty about abandoning a hungry man I could have helped.

If your planning a Birthday party, Graduation party, or any other festive event, think about taking and transforming a metal tub in to a photo collage filled with presents or other party favors.

Your first task would be to choose which photos of course fit the occasion. For your child’s Birthday party for example, you may want to gather photos from the time they were young to the present. For a friend’s party you may want to gather photos from activities you’ve shared together.

Preview and arrange the photos in the way you think your family and friends might like to see them displayed on the tub. Lightly spray the back of each photo with Artist spray adhesive and hold until the adhesive bonds to metal surface, approx. 5-10 seconds. [Please note − Artist spray adhesive is excellent for short-term bonding. The photos can be easily removed. If you want your metal tub photo collage to be a permanent display, I would recommend using an adhesive that is stronger, yet will not damage your photos.] Next, peel off rub-off type letters and apply to the front of the tub to further personalize with your child’s name, the date, year, or a simple phrase, like ‘Happy Graduation’. Letters can be easily removed as well so the tub can be used for other purposes. Attach ribbon to handle and add balloons. Fill the inside of the tub with your gifts and packages.

Here are the supplies you need for this project:

*Your photos
*Metal tub – We used one that’s 9″ H x 16″L x 10″D
*Artist adhesive
*Ribbon
*Peel and stick removable letters & numbers (We used black)
*Balloons
*Scissors

A simple, attractive, and festive craft idea that anyone can do. Get others involved to add to the fun.
Now, its your turn!

We live in a capitalist society where the value and price of any given commodity will be directly determined by the interrelated concepts of supply and demand in that the more readily available a particular resource it is, the less it will cost the purchaser and the converse is also true which is why gold is far more expensive than the likes of coal.
However, the value of a particular commodity will also be directly influenced and determined according to the significance/relevance it presents to the potential purchaser. For a private citizen, it is highly unlikely that they will have any great or real need for the likes of a fleet of heavy good vehicles. However, such a fleet of vehicles would be directly beneficial to someone involved in the construction industry, or someone who has to routinely transport goods over long distances.
In the context of winnie the pooh coloring pages, many parents are a little hesitant to purchase them on the basis that they are a finite resource, in other words, once they have been colored in they will no longer provide any (or at least the same) degree of entertainment and pleasure as they did previously. From a economic/capitalist perspective, such concerns are perfectly understandable, although like anything else in the world, in order to reach a more balanced and accurate conclusion it is necessary to consider all of the different variables that are in play.
Given how commercially successful the Winnie the Pooh franchise has became (having reached cult status across the globe) this has meant that the supply of winnie the pooh coloring pages is also very easily accessible which in turn (if we refer back to the points raised earlier in the article) means that they are pretty cheap as well.
If you really want to drive the costs associated with the purchase of winnie the pooh coloring pages then you will be glad to learn that there are a number of winnie the pooh coloring pages available over the internet. These electronic winnie the pooh coloring pages work in precisely the same manner as their hardcopy, physical peers in that the child is required to color them in. The child will be presented with an electronic paint palette which they can use to shade in the various parts of the colouring pages as and when required. You can easily locate these sites simply by accessing a search engine and then entering “electronic winnie the pooh coloring pages”.

How many of us parents have more than one child, and then have to contend with a civil war that breaks out whenever a toy is given to one child and not the other? If you give winnie the pooh free coloring pages to one child, you run the risk of incurring the righteous wrath of the other and so to that end then, you can use the online winnie the pooh coloring pages booklet to avoid such potential complications.

A collection of garden creatures by artist David Rogers.
These little creatures that we often take for granted outnumber us a million to one. Many live in community working groups, one for the common good of all. Their ranks include engineers, soldiers, weightlifters, weavers, hunters, stalkers, collectors, and royalty, even.

When you take this remarkable and diverse group of “gardeners hidden” and recreate a massive scale with all-natural materials, which have large insects. The effect is a role reversal of dimension and perception.

It was in the fall of 1990, while staying on a cousin’s farm in Vermont’s Green Mountains, that I encountered a maple sapling bent over from a previous winter’s ice storm. There was something about the curvature and posture of this particularly ravaged tree-a backbone to a large beast, perhaps-that suggested a new life
for the tree. Using dried branches and different varieties of tree saplings, a “dinosaur” sculpture emerged in twelve inspired days.

This first large-scale branch construction sculpture encompassed and crystallized all of my previous work and life experience. It would forever transform my perception of what could be conceived and created with all-natural materials.

The sculptures are created using different combination of whole trees found standing or fallen dead, cut green trees selectively harvested willow family, dry branches and other forest materials.
The unique nature of these materials, shapes, colors and textures offer these sculptures with character, definition, and a sense of movement.

Since its debut in 1994 at the Dallas Arboretum, the Big Bugs exhibit has traveled around the U.S.. It consistently brings in swarms (indeed!) new audiences to all the places you visit. Provides a visually stunning platform for educational programs and interaction, one of the main objectives of the exhibition Big mistakes. Large errors also has the effect of helping to create greater public awareness of its host institution as a fun and interesting educational resource throughout the year, with a concomitant increase in attendance.

This increase in aid leads to a broader membership base and the type of community involvement that provides the necessary resources for the institution to grow, expand and grow, creating opportunities for even greater extent.

The one thing that can ruin homemade soap making faster than anything else: bad recipes. At their best, bad soap recipes lead to piles of sticky gloop, completely unrecognizable as soap. At worst, you can create a bar of soap that contains extra lye, and can potentially burn or blind you when you try to use it. Scary stuff!

Most new soap makers don’t even realize when they’ve got a bad recipe. They assume that they messed up. Maybe they think that they didn’t properly recognize trace, the point when saponification begins. Or they’re afraid that they didn’t measure right, or didn’t mix correctly. They blame themselves, and their lack of experience at making safe soap.

The worst part is, if you’ve got a bad recipe, and you do persist and try again – your soap will still fail. If the recipe is bad, it doesn’t matter how closely you follow the directions, you can’t make a good, safe soap. Of those that persist, and fail a second time, how many go for a third try?

But have hope! Checking a recipe is actually incredibly simple, and in only about a minute online, you can easily verify whether your recipe is properly balanced with a safe ratio of lye and oils.

What You’ll Need

Your soap recipe. You can find these online, in books, or use my basic soap recipe.

An online lye calculator.

An online lye calculator allows you to verify that your recipe has the correct ratio of lye and oils. If this ratio is off, you may end up with really soft, greasy soap (too much oil), or dangerous lye-heavy soap (too much lye).

Search for “lye calculator” in your favorite web search engine, and try a couple to see which suits you best.

How to Do It

Most online lye calculators are fairly simple. You’ll need to enter:

what type of lye you are using. Choose Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) for bar soap, or Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) liquid soaps.

The type and amount of each oil you are using. For each oil in the recipe, find it on the calculator, and enter the amount used in the recipe (usually in ounces).

Optional: superfatting percentage, or lye discount. These both allow you to use extra oil, beyond what is required to use up all the lye. This gives you a safety buffer, to be sure all of the lye will be used, and helps moisturize your skin. 4-6% is usually recommended, but you’ll want to enter the amount shown in your recipe, so you can verify that all of the numbers match.

Some calculators won’t ask you about the superfatting, they’ll simply show you a table at the end with recommended superfat values.

Once you enter and submit this information, you should see a summary that includes how much lye to use, how much water is necessary to dissolve the lye, and perhaps different superfatting percentages.

Compare this to your recipe. Make sure the amounts of oils and lye match what is shown in the recipe. If you have concerns (such as the lye amount not matching), you can always double check with another calculator, to verify that the calculations are correct.

It may look like a lot when it’s all written out. But in reality, it’s as easy as going to the calculator, entering the numbers from the recipe, and pressing “submit”. In an instant you’ll know if the recipe is safe to use, or if there are red flags that their may be problems.

Testing your recipes, even when they’re from trusted sources, is a smart thing to do. It’s easy to make typos, or to copy something down wrong, and verifying the recipe is a quick painless procedure that will keep you from wasting time and energy on a potentially dangerous recipe.
